Plant Natural Products: Molecular Evolution, Biochemistry and Functional Genomics
We are located at the University of Victoria in the Department of Biology and are part of the Centre for Forest Biology. The Ehlting lab studies how and why plants produce secondary metabolites, a diverse set of bioactive, specialized metabolites. We are also interested in how secondary metabolites evolved to the immense chemical diversity we see today and how we can use bioactive metabolite as nutraceutical or to identify novel medicinal drug candidates. A focus is on phenolic compounds, which have many and diverse functions in plant development and chemical ecology, from wood formation to protection against pests and pathogens.
